Energy Efficient HVAC Systems

Energy consumption has become a key factor for consideration when choosing HVAC systems for buildings. Across the globe, HVAC system accounts for approximately 40% of total building energy consumption.

The energy goal of any commercial or industrial building is to reduce its energy requirements and in turn, save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

To achieve energy-efficient HVAC systems in buildings, it is essential to enhance the designs of various integrated mechanical and electrical components. A more efficient HVAC system will lead to a significant reduction in power consumption in buildings. Below is a list of energy-efficient HVAC solutions for industries and commercial buildings.

LIQUID CHILLER

Liquid chiller is one of the solutions for commercial and industrial applications where building owners require energy efficiency, superior reliability, and optimal performance. For energy savings, the necessary features that make the application suitable are:

  • Inverter-driven condenser fan motors propelled by an EC motor, also known as brushless DC, with unique electronics to manage commutation. This provides great accuracy for fans that require higher efficiencies and variable speed.
  • Inverter-driven twin screw compressor allows precise capacity matching of building load and significantly minimizes energy consumption.
  • In the liquid chiller, compressors, fans, and pump motors are all driven using variable frequency drive. Therefore, all VFDs work according to the required load. Consequently, less energy consumption.
  • NovationTM aluminum condenser with high-efficiency micro-channel coils technology enhances heat transfer, which reduces the working rate of the fan. Hence, reduces huge amount of energy.
  • A flooded shell-and-tube evaporator with new copper tubes for low-pressure drops enhances efficient cooling.
  • Electronic expansion device permitting operation at a lower condensing pressure and improved utilization of the evaporator heat exchange surface (superheat control) – Economiser system with electronic expansion device for increased cooling capacity.

The chiller can be used for the following applications:

  • Industry
  • Hotel
  • Datacenter
  • Hospital
  • Green building
  • Multi-residential

HEAT RECOVERY VENTILATOR (HRV)

The rapid increase in space cooling demand in recent years during the sweltering summer season in Nigeria requires technology to be as efficient as possible, consuming the lowest amount of energy necessary. A heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system can meet this demand by lowering the building energy demand by pre-cooling.

Heat recovery is an application method deployed to reduce the cooling demand of buildings by recovering the residual coldness in the exhaust air. The fresh air introduced into the space is pre-cooled and the fresh air enthalpy is reduced before it enters the room. This reduces the compressor working rate hence, reduction in energy consumption.

Similarly, another way of reducing the energy needed for the HVAC equipment is by introducing FREE-COOLING. Free cooling is available in packaged ac, precision ac, air terminal boxes, and much more. This works in areas where the ambient temperature is less than the desired temperature in the space to be conditioned.

VARIABLE REFRIGERANT FLOW (VRF)

The refrigerant in VRFs is utilized as a cooling and heat transfer medium. The refrigerant is conditioned by an outdoor condensing unit and then circulated within the building to multiple indoor fan-coil units.

To achieve a variable refrigerant flow, VRFs incorporate a direct current inverter on the compressor that supports variable motor speeds. This allows the VRFs to operate only at the speed necessary to meet demand, using variable frequency drive compressors, and this permits significant energy savings at partial load conditions. VRF units come in different models:

  • Cassettes
  • Console
  • High wall
  • Ductable types (slim, mid- static, and high–static)

INVERTER SPLIT AIR CONDITIONER

Inverter ACs are on the rise these days due to the spike in electricity costs and the need for energy-efficient air conditioners. Inverter ACs are more expensive than standard ACs, but it is wise to get an inverter AC for the long run if pricing is not a concern. For those unaware, air conditioners with inverter technology run the compressor at varying speeds that automatically adjust based on the room temperature. For instance, a 1.5-Ton Inverter AC can lower its capacity to 1-Ton or increase it to 1.75-Tons as per the requirement. This helps maintain a constant temperature while saving 30 to 40 percent on energy resulting in significantly low electricity bills or fuel consumption.

CONCLUSION

Efficient HVAC Systems allow commercial, industrial, and residential buildings to optimize HVAC equipment without wasting energy needlessly. This is also vital in protecting and conserving the environment. System improvements through design, installation, and maintenance are critical in delivering dependable, energy-efficient, and sustainable HVAC systems. Mandilas has a vast array of energy-efficient solutions readily available. Our understanding of the HVAC industry coupled with the ability to deploy personalized energy-efficient HVAC solutions ensures significant energy savings for industries and commercial buildings.
